Trump vs Maduro: US-Venezuela Tensions Escalate as Trump Threatens Maduro (2026)

The political chessboard in Venezuela is heating up, with the US and Russia locked in a tense standoff.

On December 22nd, then-US President Donald Trump made a bold statement: he suggested it would be "smart" for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down. This declaration came amidst escalating US naval operations aimed at Venezuela's oil wealth. But here's where it gets controversial: Russia, a key ally of Venezuela, immediately voiced its "full support" for Maduro's government, signaling a potential clash of global powers.

Trump's statement, made at his Florida home, seemed to imply a desire to see Maduro leave office. However, he also added a veiled threat, suggesting that any resistance from Maduro would be met with a firm response. Maduro swiftly responded, urging Trump to focus on his own country's issues.

This exchange occurred on the eve of a UN Security Council meeting, where the growing crisis was set to be discussed. In a show of solidarity, the foreign ministers of Russia and Venezuela condemned the US actions, which included strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats and the seizure of oil tankers. A US official confirmed that a third ship was also being pursued.

And this is the part most people miss: The Russian foreign ministry expressed deep concern over the escalating US actions, warning of potential serious consequences for the region and international shipping. Moscow reaffirmed its unwavering support for Venezuela's leadership and people.

Since September, US forces have been conducting strikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in over 100 fatalities, including some fishermen. Trump also announced a blockade of "sanctioned oil vessels" to and from Venezuela, accusing Maduro's government of using oil money to fund illicit activities.

Venezuela, in turn, views these actions as an attempt at regime change and accuses the US of "international piracy." Russia and China, another Venezuelan ally, have backed Caracas's request for a UN Security Council meeting to address the situation.

In a Telegram message, Venezuela's Yvan Gil stated that he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the "aggressions and flagrant violations of international law" by the US. Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow's support. Interestingly, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed Russia's support, stating that Washington was not concerned about escalation, given Russia's involvement in the Ukraine war.

Adding to the complexity, Gil read a letter on state TV from Maduro, addressed to UN member nations, warning that the US blockade would impact global oil and energy supplies.

What do you think? Does the US have the right to intervene in Venezuela's affairs, or is it a violation of sovereignty? Is Russia's support for Maduro a sign of solidarity or a strategic move to counter US influence? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
