The moment Prince George was told, "Granny Diana would be proud of you," during the Royal Family's traditional Christmas Day gathering at Sandringham has ignited a lively discussion among royal enthusiasts on social media.
John Loughrey, a 70-year-old avid fan of the royals from Wandsworth, who is often regarded as one of Princess Diana's most devoted admirers, approached the young prince during this festive occasion outside St Mary Magdalene Church on the Norfolk estate. This poignant encounter was recorded on video and quickly circulated online, capturing Mr. Loughrey addressing the 12-year-old heir about his beloved grandmother, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Paris back in 1997.
While many viewers found this interaction to be heartwarming, others have raised concerns, deeming it inappropriate.
Mr. Loughrey, wearing a hat embellished with pins representing the Royal Family, spoke directly to George, who was accompanied by his siblings, Princess Charlotte, age 10, and Prince Louis, age 7. He began, "George, I've got something to say to you. Granny Diana would be ever so proud of you." In response, the young prince graciously smiled and replied, "Thank you." Charlotte also exhibited her good manners during this exchange, expressing her gratitude for the gifts Mr. Loughrey had brought for the children by saying, "Thank you very much, that's so kind."
Despite the overall goodwill of the moment, some social media users voiced their discomfort with the comment made to George. One user remarked, "I'm sorry, whoever said that to him, you've crossed a line. It's not your place to tell him what his late grandmother would have felt." Another commenter challenged the assumption behind the statement, asking, "I find it quite odd to say such a thing to George. How can this person presume to know what Diana would think?"
Others attempted to find a middle ground in their views, with one user stating, "She meant well, but discussing that topic isn't really her place when speaking to them."
In contrast, several defenders of the interaction noted that Prince George appeared genuinely happy following the comment.
Mr. Loughrey is no stranger to royal events. The retired kitchen assistant arrived at Sandringham the night before Christmas Eve, spending the night in a foldable chair in order to secure a prime spot at the front of the queue. During the walkabout, Prince William recognized him by name and even introduced him to his children. King Charles also acknowledged this dedicated supporter, commenting on Mr. Loughrey's growing collection of badges, saying, "You've collected more badges since last year!"
This incident raises intriguing questions about public interactions with the royal family: Where should we draw the line in our comments? What do you think—was Mr. Loughrey’s remark touching or intrusive? Share your thoughts below!
